American Primeval Is Far More Accurate Than The Book Of Mormon

Yes, the Mormonites seem to have some misgivings about the portrayal of their religion and its leader in the hit Netflix series, American Primeval.

We have stories to tell. This story includes a retelling of the how Brigham Young led the Mormons from one part of America into another, and participated in violence.

This actually happened.

Did Young get his hands dirty? Not literally. Is the show misleading? No.

In an effort to build a society rooted in his own religion of polygamy, racial purity, and manifest destiny, the leader of the cult used violent rhetoric to justify the actions that he knew were happening.

And there is nothing insensitive or ahistorical about depicting that.

Mormons are not a racial group. They’re a religious devotion group. You choose to be one. And the Mormons, like many other Americans, chose to defraud and ethnically cleanse American Indians.

Brigham Young, in his sermons and private notes, spoke of bloodshed, of chopping off the heads of his enemies. That makes him a violence-hungry fanatic. There are no two ways about it. There is no mischaracterizing the kind of man he was in that regard.

And while we’re on the subject of historical accuracy, the entire Mormonic belief system is founded on a book that claims:

  1. horses, cows, elephants, metalwork, and wheat existed in the Americas before Columbus.
  2. Indians are the descendants of Jews.
  3. Jews arrived in America by wooden submarines 3,000 years ago.

Mormonites don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to historical accuracy.

It may not be true that Brigham Young directly ordered the slaughter of Southern Paiute Indians. But he sanctioned it with his words and actions.

It is not persecution of any religious group to hold their leaders accountable for their words and actions. Ever.

And I didn’t even get to the part about his views on Black people.

You can look that one up yourself.

  1. Interesting Blog. Feels more driven by emotion than fact. I found American Primeval inaccurate and misleading. Only one of the leaders that was responsible for this atrocity was held liable according to historical records. The show failed to capture all catalysts that lead up to the massacre. The real event happened over five days and in the end the survivors that surrendered were executed my the militia and not the native Americans. If every leader was charged for the crimes of his people we would never have any popes, pastors, etc. There are definitely many that should have been held responsible.

Overall article seems more like anti-Mormon rhetoric.
